LAT
Reggie Lee
Jimi Germ Comics
Major Zombie
Geronimo stilton, asterix obelix
Tintin
Peanuts
Archie
Some of the Gempak Starz series (BM or Mandarin)

Old Disney comics
New disney early reader comics (up to Level 3)
Just about any Golden Age Marvel or DC comics. You know, like in those bumper B&W compilations you can get.
Asterix, Steven Sterk, Lucky Luke, Johan ; Pirlouit, etc. Billy batson and the magic of shazam Teen TItans Year one.
Bone, Doraemon, Smurfs, Tintin and the Wizard of Oz.

Don says:

” all of these are usually categorized as “All-Ages Friendly”, which means the grown-ups can feel free to enjoy them too.

Also, the age bands are based on my own opinion and as parents, you’d obviously know what level of reading your child is currently at, so adjust accordingly.

Anyways, assuming you’re asking specifically for super-hero material, here we go:

5-9 year olds:
1) DC Super Friends – based on the toy line from Mattel (you don’t have to buy the toys to enjoy the stories), this was a kid-friendly comic book title that’s no longer in print, unfortunately. Luckily, the comics have been collected in the following books:
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/1401221564
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/1401229123
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/1401222897
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/1401230318

2) Tiny Titans – a brilliant all-ages comic book series based on the Teen Titans characters as playschool kids. Collected in the following volumes (I haven’t listed all 8 volumes here):
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/1401220789
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/1401223281
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/1401223281
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/140123173X
http://www.amazon.com/Tiny-Titans-Vol-Aw-Yeah/dp/1401238122

3) Superman Family Adventures
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/140124050X
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/1401244157

7-10 year olds:
1) Green Lantern Animated – based on the cartoon, this is a kid-friendly collection of the ongoing comic book:
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/140123819X
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/1401243282

2) The All-New Batman Brave & The Bold – based on the cartoon series, this was an awesome kid-friendly version of the classic Batman team-up book. It’s been collected in the following volumes:
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/1401232728
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/1401228968
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/1401231438
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/1401238521
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/1401235247

3) Young Justice – again, based on the now-cancelled TV series, this is aimed at slightly older kids. Collected as follows:
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/1401233570
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/1401237487
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/1401237487
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/1401237487

4) The Incredibles – a comic book series based on the Pixar characters, written by Mark Waid, legendary comic book writer. Iz good comics, collected as follows:
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/1934506834
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/1608865185
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/B005OL9U8S
http://www.amazon.com/…
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/1608865835

8-13 year olds:
1) Marvel Adventures Spider-Man – the younger reader friendly adventures of everyone’s favorite wall crawler. Incidentally, the “Marvel Adventures” branding covers other Marvel heroes too and is the designation for the younger reader series. So if you’re on the lookout for kid-friendly Marvel superhero material, look for that branding. Some collections below, but there are a lot of additional volumes I haven’t listed:
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/0785117393
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/0785119035
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/0785141170
http://www.amazon.com/…/dp/0785123105

2) Showcase Presents collections – these are black and white reprints of classic DC comic books from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, published as nice, thick, phonebook-sized collections. Some material collects horror and war stuff, but a lot of classic, beloved superhero stuff is collected too. Considering the time period this is from, it’s pretty tame by today’s standards, but parents should still select material based on what you think is appropriate for your respective kids:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1…

3) Marvel Essentials collections – the equivalent black & white, phonebook-sized collections of classic and much-beloved Marvel comic books:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1…

If you want that expanded beyond superheroes, it’s gonna need a different post.

a few older poems-revisited

I realised that I haven’t posted poetry here (darn you social media LOL)

You Will find the Strength

Although times may seem dark and dreary

You will find the strength to go on within yourself.

When life seems on a downward path

When tears seem to fall on a regular basis,

When it seems as if you are alone,

You will find the strength within your self.

When the day seems an uphill battle

When the wrongs seems to be more than the rights

When everyone seems to be against you

You will find the strength within yourself.

When the day seems long and hard

When worries seem to pile up

When fights erupt around you and the world seems uncaring

You will find the strength within yourself.

Strength lies deep within yourself

Pools of resolve which you can draw on

No matter what pain, dramas and battles you will face over the years

You will find the strength to carry on

You don’t have to look far, just within yourself

You will find the strength within yourself.

Never Give Up

Although it seems that life throws curveballs more than flowers,

Never give up.

Even when the rain pelts down on what should be your parade,

Never give up.

Even when the bills pile up higher than your ability to pay them,

Never give up.

The clouds may seem to hide the sun, but there is always hope.

Walk with those who are willing to just be there,

Quiet in their support through your pain,

Talk to those who know what you go through.

Lean on those who are willing to stand with you,

Giving you strength when you need it,

Telling you “not to give up”.

For you need not walk alone in those dark days

It is not a failure to accept help when offered,

Especially from those whose sincerity rings true.

It’s not a failure to feel that you are struggling and to admit it,

For those who care, this will not matter,

They will be there, with whatever you need.

Never give up hope.

For there’s a silver lining in the darkness,

It may seem faint or hardly there at all,

But that silver thread of hope and positivity is always there.

It calls out to you to never give up,

to fight through those dark days.

Through the tears, through the losses

It is there in the voices of those who love you, who support you when you need it most

It is there in the precious moments and memories you share,

In laughter, tears and the quietness of just being together,

those blessings you do have but can’t always see

Hold onto that silver thread of hope tightly and never give up.

There is always hope

There’s hope in your tears

for with those watery droplets, pain leaves your soul.

There’s hope in those arms

which encircle you, bringing comfort when you need it.

There’s hope in children’s laughter

as they find joy in the world around them.

There’s hope in those quiet moments

Reading your favourite book or comic.

There’s hope in those moments

When you sing songs with your kids.

There’s hope in those times

When a plan comes together better than expected.

There’s hope in sitting on a blanket,

under a tree, a breeze blowing

as you watch the sun beams chase each other through the leaves.

There’s hope in a shared meal with those who care about you

Who understand the hard days and cheer for you on the good days.

There’s hope in watching the smiles of those around you.

There’s hope in writing stories and poems on a rainy day.

There’s hope in tender, squishy kisses from your little men.

There’s hope in those times when he holds your hand

On the days when you struggle to find the light.

There’s hope in those times he says nothing

but quietly places your favourite chocolate bar or that cup of coffee you need on your desk.

There’s hope to be found everywhere in those little things that happen every day

No matter how dark the day, how high those bills pile

How much it seems to be a struggle

There is always hope to hold onto and to carry you through.

For it is hope that sustains the human spirit

Even when there’s no end in sight.

It is hope that carries you over those hurdles.

It is hope that smacks those curveballs life likes to throw at you, far far away.

It is hope that you must grab, hold onto, no matter how dim its light is.

For no matter what happens, there is always hope.

Whispers

Quiet solitude, words floating across the page

Sun beams dancing across your face,

Whispers on a breeze carrying thoughts to you.

Gentle words.

Love.

Hope.

Kindness.

Hug.

Friend.

Child.

Family.

Happy.

Kiss.

Laughter.

Whispers of words that resonate into your soul.

Whispers that stay still when you are at peace,

And keep the doubts and fears at bay when you are caught in the darkness.

Whispers that speak of memories.

Whispers that are free of reflections

Whispers that catch images of those you love

Like shadows in a candlelit room.

Whispers of your hurt and pain war with those of peace and calm.

All these whispers swirl like storm clouds across the vanishing horizon.

Your spirit is like those storm chasers

Knowing when to be still and just be in awe of the beauty

Knowing when to step away so your heart beats another day.

Whispers of power, strengthening your spirit.

Let the whispers wash over you, opening your soul and spirit

To the amazing things you can achieve.

Connect to those whispers as they shore you up

In those dark days where the storm clouds threaten to win.

Draw strength from those whispers

Wrap them around you like a cocoon,

Like a protective shell.

But do not hide behind them.

Reach out and grab the threads of life,

Weave them into those whispers,

Making them stronger and more powerful.

Whispers within your soul. Hold onto them.

Wrote this poem a while back.

There’s a comic script to go with it 🙂 Wrote this poem for one of the Pencil Jack writing contest/exercises. It was based on a drawing by the most awesome Loston Wallace 🙂 Basically it was a skeleton in armour half buried in the snow. UPDATE: Pix here Thanks Loston 🙂

It’s been a while. been going through my stuff as well. 🙂 Ive been so busy running home, kids, biz etc, the creative stuff (services stuff doesn’t come under this hehe) has been sidelined. Need to write again.

They Wept

THEY WEPT WHEN YOU TOLD THEM WHY YOU HAD TO GO
THEY WEPT AS YOU KISSED THEM GOODBYE WITH NARY A GLANCE
THEY WEPT AS THEY WAVED BY THE WAYSIDE
THEY WEPT WHEN YOU MARCHED GAILY OFF TO WAR.
THEY WEPT WHEN THEY READ YOUR LETTERS HOME SO FULL OF HOPE AND VITALITY.

WHO WEEPS FOR YOU NOW, YOUNG SOLDIER
LYING HERE ALONE IN THE COLD?
WHO WEEPS FOR YOU NOW, YOUNG SOLDIER
AS YOUR ONCE SHINING ARMOUR RUSTS IN THE RAIN?
WHO WEEPS FOR YOU NOW, YOUNG SOLDIER
AS THE WARM FLESH ROTS SLOWLY FROM YOUR BONES?
WHO WEEPS FOR YOU NOW, YOUNG SOLDIER
AS YOU LAY GASPING YOUR FINAL BREATH?
WHO WEEPS FOR YOU NOW, YOUNG SOLDIER?
AS THOSE AROUND YOU WERE DESTROYED IN A BLINK OF AN EYE?

NO ONE WILL WEEP IN THE ARMY TENTS
AS THEY PLAY AT BEING GENERALS IN TIMES OF WAR
NO ONE WILL WEEP IN THE HOSPITALS
AS THEY STRUGGLE WITH SO MANY VICTIMS OF WAR
NO ONE WILL WEEP IN THE ALLEYWAYS
WHERE THOSE ABANDONED BY THEIR MASTERS STRUGGLE TO SURVIVE
NO ONE WILL WEEP IN THE CORRIDORS OF POWER
AS THEY MOVE ARMIES ACROSS THE MAP LIKE PAWNS IN A CHESS GAME
SAFE IN THEIR MARBLED LUXURY.

NO ONE WILL WEEP FOR YOU NOW, YOUNG SOLDIER
GONE AND LONG FORGOTTEN,
ONE FIGURE IN THE CASULTIES OF WAR
NO ONE WILL WEEP FOR YOU NOW.

Got these new books today. Worth taking a look.

Daphne Lee, book reviewer and columnist from the Star has come out with a series of children’s books. Article on them here.the illustrator is also someone we know, Amir, very very talented chappie!

so I picked them up from MPH today (thank heaven for Xmas book vouchers HAHA), RM9.90 each (a set of 4 in total). Worth getting folks!

Don took some pix of the covers etc, go see in his Flickr album. I havent read them yet but I think the print quality didnt showcase amir’s art as well as it could have but that’s the way it is sometimes.

Great job Daphne, and Amir!!! 🙂 It’s also for a good cause, the proceeds go to a charitable foundation! 🙂

also got nigella lawson’s new book, Feast! YAY YAY!!

What Ugga said to me yday:

Ugga: Do you know what I want to see you write a fantasy piece with a female lead on a journey to accomplish some mission
overcome amazing odds, encountering friends and foes, overcoming her shortcomings to defeat the evil king or something like that, a real mythic structured story?  I want to see you write from a set structure: and I think you would do a great job on something like that.. etc..

Lia: Errr… ok….

(sorry Ugga LOL)

I woke up this morning from a dream that had action, romance, conflict, flaming swords, fighting and a female character, flawed yet with the right amount of “STUFF”… and my first thought was: (ok ok maybe my 2nd thought after being woken by kids) OOOH THATS MY STORY right there… weird or what.. NOt sure if I will write script or prose… I havent written prose in the longest time…
Now it’s just to get to writing it… hmmmmmmm……..

Ahh… Does a soul good to start creating again…

After a LONG hiatus, I finally got some “kick” to get back into writing (and maybe colouring eventually)…

Here’s my latest script (a take on the Little Red Riding Hood tale). This is for a PencilJack.com’s writing lab writing contest (yay we are now at no:17!!!!)…

TITLE: Hell has no fury like Little Red….

BY: ANGELIA ONG

Page 1

Panel 1– The scene opens up in a heavily wooded forest. It has recently rained. You see the tail end of a red cape disappearing (right of panel) and a set of muddy footprints but don’t actually see any person.

CAPTION-IT HAS BEEN FOREWRITTEN THAT I MUST KEEP THESE FORESTS SAFE…

Panel 2  Flashback to a cosy room (low beams, thatch roof) with a roaring fire. It’s fairly spartan, wooden table, chairs and partial view of a bed.. Looks very homey.

CAPTION- IT IS MY HERITAGE..

Panel 3– a large wolf with glowing red eyes is feasting on the lower half of an elderly female body with a nightcap on her white curls and long sleeved nightgown lying on the bed from above scene. It’s blood and carnage everywhere.

CAPTION- TO KILL THOSE WHO PREY ON THE OLD AND HELPLESS..

Panel 4– we see the same wolf now cut into two with an axe sticking out from his throat. Blood everywhere. Strange blue smoke escaping from the wounds.

CAPTION- A WOODCUTTER’S AXE WOULD BE THE TRADITIONAL WEAPON OF CHOICE FOR ONE SUCH AS I… MAXIMUM DAMAGE, MINIMUM EFFORT…

Panel 5– A fresh grave with a simple headstone with “Granny” on it. On top of this headstone lies the bloodied nightcap and a folded red hooded cap on top of the grave.

CAPTION- BUT SOMETIMES I ARRIVE TOO LATE TO SAVE THE VICTIMS OF THIS EVIL..

Page 2

Panel 1– We see the blue smoke from the quartered wolf from the previous panel gathering to form a particular humanoid shape.

CAPTION- THERE ARE MANY OF MY KIND WHO HAVE TRIED TO FIND WAYS TO RID OUR FORESTS OF THIS RECURRING SCURGE..

Panel 2  An wolf-like human with elongated fangs and glowing eyes finally emerges from the smoke.

CAPTION- BUT WITHOUT MUCH SUCCESS…

Panel 3– (large) The terrifying sight of  the wolf creature, snarling, as it attempts to tear down the door to a peasant’s cottage.

CAPTION- AND SO WE START OVER AGAIN…

Page 3

Panel 1/2/3- Split panels (into 3), 3 different grannies faces frozen in fear.

CAPTION- MORE LIVES LOST…

Page 4

Panel 1– We see the Wolf creature inside another cosy cottage, a granny feebly holding out a burning torch in front of her, as if to ward off this crazed creature.

GRANNY- SHOO! SHOO!

WOLF- [GROWL] FOOLISH WOMAN…

Panel 2  We see a woodcutter’s axe flying through the air, its sharp metal blade glinting in the light..

SFX- phfftttt…………

Panel 3-the wolf creature is cut across the neck, clean into two..

CAPTION- BUT NOT THIS TIME…..

Panel 4– The granny (over our shoulder view) is looking grateful as the wolf;s body is being dragged out her front door.

CAPTION- I WILL PUT A STOP TO THIS SENSELESS CARNAGE..

Panel 5– Again the blue smoke dissipating around the snarling wolf creature stepping over the wolf body.

Page 5

Panel 1– the wolf is shocked by a swinging sword blade bathed in a red glow, moves to avoid it.

Panel 2  The wolf is in mid leap towards (its back to us) a small shadowy figure in a hooded cloack holding the glowing red sword.

WOLF-[GROWL] YOU CANNOT KILL ME…

Panel 3– The wolf;s chest has been pierced through with the glowing sword, flames are all around the wound..

WOLF-.. WHAT.. MANNER OF WEAPON IS THIS…

Panel 4  We now see the shadowy figure in a red cloak removing the hood, revealing a beautiful young girl (around 12 years old) with brown hair and cold brown eyes.

GIRL- A SWORD OF FIRE…  HURTS DOESN’T IT?

Panel 5– the wolf is being consumed by the flames.. The young girl looks coldly at the burning flesh, unmoved.

WOLF- AAAAAAAHHHH… WHO.. ARE… YOU…

Panel 6– (small) close of the coldly smiling young girl.

GIRL- THEY CALL ME… LITTLE RED….

Panel 7– the young girl still smiling coldly as she pulls out the flaming sword from the dead wolf…

GIRL- AND I DON’T NEED NO WOODCUTTER TO SAVE ME FROM A WOLF..

-Fin-

Finally..

I quit as PRoduction Manager for ASJ, whew.. a sigh of relief..

now I get to concentrate on the creativity aspect, esp of mac and cod.. 🙂 I do have to colour web 16, Fusciart’s stuff is going to be amazing (and a scary prospect) to colour, man!   And BG-Origins is coming along nicely.. cant wait..
