Daily ramblings from this Cuddly Family in Malaysia…

what’s next? It’s time I started seriously writing my web comic script, otherwise poor Frank, Don, Jorge will be left dangling… mucho hurry da up methinks..

Digital colouring has to take a back seat for a while, it’s been an interesting learning experience, I really wanna give it a go but I think I’ve got to pound out these scripts first cos there’s edits, re-workings, character descriptions, never-ending mah… let alone planning schedule, timelines, getting it out there, promotions…habis leh…

oh well, onwards and hopefully upwards!

TITLE: SURPRISE PACKAGE

Page 1

Panel 1- (large) Mid morning-Panoramic view of a nice middle class neighbourhood, the white picket fence variety. You can see kids bikes strewn on the grass, a basketball or baseball on the front yards here and there. Mums walking along the tree lined pavement with kids in strollers or walking beside them, waving to each other across the street. Very peaceful suburbia look.

Panel 2- We now come to a two storey white house with green wooden shutters and front door (with open windows, billowing pale curtains) and a front porch, cane rocking chairs, and a cane table near the front door and a red swing hangs from the branches of a large tree (to our left of the front porch). A kid’s bike is leaning against the steps of the porch.

VOICE (OP)- GRANDPOPS…. GRANDPOPS….. WHERE ARE YOU?

Panel 3- Zooming in on a young boy (8 years old, blond, blue eyes) running through a narrow passageway with wooden floors and the closing front door behind him. The sun light is mottled across the floor and the boy’s excited face.

BOY- GRANDPOPS!!!

Panel 4 (small)- We see the boy’s arms and legs disappearing around the corner of the stairway..

VOICE (OP)- UPSTAIRS, BILLY MY LAD..

Page 2

Panel 1- Billy is now puffing and panting just inside an open door of a room with a grin on his face.

BILLY- I GOT IT, GRANDPOPS! CAN WE OPEN IT YET? HUH? HUH?

Panel 2 (small)- Over the shoulder shot of a old man with a shock of white hair dressed in a warm sweater, shoulders hunched slightly. He’s sitting in a cane rocker by wide open french window doors opening out onto a balcony (that’s slightly to our left). In front of him we can just make out the eager Billy.

GRANDPOPS- NOT YET, SON. COME SIT HERE A WHILE.

Panel 3- Billy is sitting on the floor, looking affectionately up at his grandfather (whose face is still hidden in half shadows, you can see he’s an old man but nothing distinctive). A brown paper flat package is on the floor next to him. Billy’s hand is on the package, almost lovingly.

BILLY- I’VE BEEN WAITING AGES FOR THIS, GRANDPOPS. I REALLY WANNA OPEN IT!

GRANDPOPS- BEFORE WE DO THAT, I HAVE A SURPRISE FOR YOU.

Panel 4- Behind Billy, we see the bedroom door opening, a boot is stepping through the gap. Billy is looking confused.

BILLY- FOR ME?!

GRANDPOPS- YES, BILLY…

Panel 5- Close up of Billy’s face, he’s looking both surprised and really excited…

GRANDPOPS- LOOK BEHIND YOU…

Page 3

Panel 1- We see Billy obediently turning around to see who is at the door (we see a figure in shadow, just making out a pair of boots…

BILLY-….. OH!!!!!

Panel 2- Billy is now leaping into the arms of a military uniform-clad man with short cropped blond hair and a strong resemblence to Billy.

BILLY- DADDYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU’RE BACK!!!!!!!

Panel 3 (large)- The three generations are sitting together now, Billy is again on the floor, leaning against his father’s knee. His father is sitting in an easy chair, smiling down at him. Grandpops is still in the rocking chair, beaming at the surprise and delight he’s given Billy. We can see the package on his lap.

Page 4

Panel 1- Billy has turned to Grandpops, pointing eagerly at the package on his lap.

BILLY- GRANDPOPS, DADDY IS HERE NOW…. CAN WE OPEN THAT PLEASE? PLEASE GRANDPOPS!

Panel 2- Grandpops is handing the package to Billy’s father with a smile.

GRANDPOPS- GO AHEAD, DAN… IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING FOR US ALL..

Panel 3- Dan is cutting the string away from the package carefully, eagerly watched by Billy. Grandpops has a proud look on his face.

DAN- ALMOST…..THERE…

Panel 4 (MEDIUM)- The three males are looking at the package whose wrapper is starting to fall away, we can see the corner of what looks like a book, Dan is holding it, about to lift it up from its packaging.

DAN- HERE IT IS..

BILLY- SHOW ME, DADDY! SHOW ME!!

Page 5

Panel 1- (Splash) A hand is holding up a comic book, pristine in its clear wrapper. On the front is a World war 2 scene with army men lying on the ground or running towards the forested area, thick snow on the ground. It looks like a fierce battle. The words on the cover should read: Proletariat Comics presents “WC6- The Saga continues..”

I tried to make kuih baulu today, I got the moulds and used the recipe from Amy Beh’s article. Well.. err… it wasnt as light and fluffy as it should have been, I even tried different things to make it better but not yet.. Nevermind, it was a first try and its fun to try new things..

ai lian’s turned out heaps better!
http://mamasbagoftricks.blogspot.com/

Dug up online some more of the same recipes but they use less egg but had egg white and tapioca flour.. hmmmm. I think I will ask Auntie May Lin (Drew’s and Aggie’s mum) for her recipe, see how.. Its not like I can do it the traditional way leh..

Strange huh, Im becoming quite domesticated..but I guess I wont be sewing clothes or something anytime soon LOL There are liimts to the level of domesticity that I can do..

Next Im gng to try making a pastry based pie and see how.. After that, the lovely mi koo! a Major childhood fav… I wish I had learnt from my grandma or my great aunts but I wasnt old enough for one and I think at the time I wasnt into it all.. sad really…. but nemind, better late than never and gotta keep going.. maybe I can create my own kids childhood fav eating memories.. :D (please ignore the english lol)

I know min tagged me as “meme Childhood Food memories” I dont have five other people to send it onto really… but Im gng to name my fav 5 childhood memories, food wise..

lemme see:

1. My Ah Ma (grandma)’s bread and butter pudding. I know I know it’s not an asian dish as such bbut she made the most unbelievable thing, I have never had anything like it ANYWHERE… my sister and I are trying our darnest to see how we cld even vaguely come close.. even if it’s for me dad ;)

2. Sunday lunch’s at ah ma’s. This was the asian way of showing love and they would lovingly prepare everyones fav dish, including dessert and we’d stuff our faces. From ‘lemon curry’ (it’s a fish dish that’s yellow and a very light curry not really spicy, to western dishes to home made ice cream and for my dad, a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. It was such a happy time, we’d not really hv breakfast go there, chitchat to everyone, turn on the radio and listen to the Butterworth RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force) radio programs from the Goon show to Top of the Pops as we eat and chattered away.

3. Poh Piah (ok I know it’s all my ah ma and her sisters but dang they made good food). It was their signature dish along with their curry or asam laksa.. ohhhh mannnnn..

4. Ah Yang’s Ikan Bilis. our helper (been with the family like forever) makes the most unbelievable crispy, sweetish ikan bilis, I really hv never had anything so yum, Im trying desperately to learn but urgh no luck…

5. Can I say durian feast? I know it’s not cooked food per se LOL but we used to hv a light snack before (just to “line” the stomach) and just WHALLOP many durians hhehehehe.. Don always whimpers out after just a few seeds but mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

6(or 5 if u’re being technical abt the durian haha). Fried Chempedak. I absolutely LOVE this.

Err… does that count?
